Trans and Non Binary Parents Push Birth Industry to Rethink Care
This piece follows the pregancies of three different trans and non-binary parents and dives into the highly gendered world of giving birth. It explores the deep gendering of pregnancy within and outside of the medical industry–and the shifts needed for it to become more inclusive.

OAKLAND NORTH
I’m the politics reporter at Oakland North, a newsroom out of the UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism. I’ve covered the city council meetings, talked to Lyft drivers after the passage of the AB5 labor laws, eavesdropped on library “candi-dating” events, and talked to seniors who are cannabis evangelists. I’m currently co-producing a print and video piece on transmasculine fertility.

BLOOM MAGAZINE, VOLUMES 1 & 2
ROLE: EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
Stumptown Creative Director Jenny Censky and I created BLOOM, Stumptown’s print pub that’s not about coffee, exactly, but is a magazine about the conversations you have over cups of coffee, and often featuring the bright visionaries that work in or around our upper of choice.
INTERVIEW: JULIA SHERMAN, SALAD FOR PRESIDENT
Julia Sherman is an artist not confined by medium. She has raised silkworms and spooled cocoons into thread and lived among Benedictine nuns in denim habits who wrote musicals and produced transcendent cheeses. I chatted with her about the radical idea of making salad as creative expression.
PROFILE: TIM ROOT
Tim Root is a true visionary. This was the first of many of the “Humans of Stumptown” series I wrote and photographed when I was on staff in the Creative Department at Stumptown.
